100 UNIT HOUSING IN DOWNTOWN la

THIRD YEAR

909 W Temple St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

12  /   06   /   2021

Our studio has studied small-scale housing projects to address the specific client’s needs while exploring the meaning of the term “house” through the ADU projects. In addition, the studio investigated the definition of “housing” within the broader fabric of urban settings by strictly following building codes and zoning rules through developing a small-scale housing complex for four groups of residents. The past two projects introduced  helped to explore the meanings of “house” and “housing” as an architectural typology and as social issues. For the final assignment for the 2021 House and Housing Studio, we had explored a large-scale housing complex by utilizing architectural knowledge and skillsets developed with the past two projects for the Da Vinci site. As the final step of this studio sequence, we had push our idea of “house” and “housing” to the limit and started to understand the role of an architect within the delicate process of negotiations penetrating from the small-scale discussions addressing the needs of our client and designing a beautiful form to the large-scale conversations acknowledging the demands of the city, people, and society.

PUBLIC AMENTITIES SKETCHES

Three public amenities have to be accessible to the public.

I created a café, public bike rental, and a farmers market with rooftop terrace.

The café on the left can be accessed through the second floor and placed in the center of the complex so it is easily accessed by the tenants as well as the public.

The bike rack on the right hand side are placed in the front of the complex so the public or residents can commute to work, school, or for any travel in Downtown Los Angeles.

I chose to a public bike rental to incorporate to my living complex because DTLA is known for its heavy traffic so by adding a bike rental, it encourages an easy and fast way to commute into the city as well as a more sustainable way to travel.

The Farmers Market on the first level creates a sense of community within the complex. Encouraging the people of DTLA to come together and enjoy the terraces and the food offered at the market.

I created private nooks that each unit has which I carried on from my ADU, FOURPLEX, and now into my 100 unit housing. This was my signature mark in these housing projects and it helps to incorporate a private area when living in complexes.

SECTION DRAWINGS

Section cut drawings consist of an site section, a close-up horizontal section, as well as a cylinder cut.

The site section shows how the complex sits on the site in comparison to the Downtown Los Angeles site.

The short section cut includes a closer look into the 100 unit complex and into individual units. It gives more of an idea how the landscape, balconies, and stair circulation works.

The cylinder cut was an exercise done to create a very interesting way of looking into the building.
