ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT (IMBY)
Before creating the 100 unit living complex; we had to design an ADU for and in response to a significant work of residential architecture in the Los Angeles area
IMBY (in my backyard) counters the tendency of NIMBYism (not in my back yard) that casts a shadow over full community endorsement of the ADU program. In other words, some neighborhoods resist densification and the potential lower income tenants ADUs imply.
The pedagogical goals of this assignment is as follows: work with permanent and mobile living accessories, work at the scale of the human body, consider daylighting in room design, respond to an existing context, understand small-scale site design opportunities, develop an understanding of quotidian inhabitation that will inform the design of multiple units
BACKGROUND
We begun the project by selecting a precedent to research, model, and to put our ADU on. I chose the Adamson House located in Malibu, CA. By studying this historic building I started to visualize how the ADU will look like in correspondence to it.
My ADU is placed closer to the coastline facing the ocean as seen in the site plan. Since my ADU will be sitting near and on the same land as the Adamson House I created my own house with similar geometry but with more of a newer spin on it.
ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS
Below are a set of architectural drawings including an exploded axon, floor plans, and sections cuts. All drawings help to understand the space of the ADU.
I have consider daylighting in room design (see perspective renderings below), added a lot of windows to bring the Malibu sunlight in as well as having a view of the beach at all points.
By studying the Adamson House, I kept their incorporation of arches into my ADU to keep that Spanish style. Through adding the arch geometry I created a nook in the main bedroom upstairs where I use throughout my Fourplex and 100 unit living space.
